Garrin Evan, Abstract Artist
In my work, I strive to create a portal beyond the ordinary, offering viewers a momentary escape from the patterns and routines of everyday life. I’m inspired to connect with those who feel confined by repetition — the weekend warriors who dream of life beyond the office, the homemakers who tirelessly balance endless tasks, and anyone who finds themselves in the “everyday grind” yet seeks a way out. My art is an invitation to step away, to embrace something unfamiliar and exhilarating. It’s a tribute to the dreamers, those who imagine more.
Having earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of Florida, I’ve always been fascinated by the ways we relate to one another and to the world around us. This sociological lens greatly informs my art, which explores themes of community, technology, and our evolving sense of place. My work contemplates the impact of modern technology on our sense of connection, questioning how our increasing reliance on digital communication shapes relationships and fragments our sense of community. As our screens grow brighter, I am interested in how our bonds may grow fainter, and I aim to express that tension between connection and isolation.
There is a longing for simplicity in my art, a yearning for a slower, more tangible existence. Through vibrant colors and abstract forms, I evoke a nostalgia for a time when relationships felt closer and the world seemed more grounded. My compositions invite viewers to explore their own sense of place in a rapidly shifting world, to consider how they relate to others in both physical and digital spaces.
The effects of social media, especially on the minds of adolescents, intrigue me deeply. I see art as a counterpoint to the quick, dopamine-fueled world of online content — a reminder to slow down, to engage thoughtfully. My work asks viewers to pause, to experience a visual dialogue that invites introspection rather than instant gratification.
Inspired by the boldness of the European Expressionists of the early 1900s and the raw energy of the Abstract Expressionists of 1950s New York, I am drawn to vibrant color, the mysterious, and the unconventional. My pieces often feature bold, saturated hues juxtaposed with contrasting tones, creating compositions that pulse with intensity and subtle intrigue. Through each piece, I hope to stir a sense of adventure and discovery, offering viewers a chance to disconnect from the digital noise and reconnect with the essence of the human experience.
